- wistfuljane: A Rant In Non-Linear Form - I think for many people who scoffs at fans for being angry at translators and publishers for not keeping cultural conventions such as names and honorifics, they do not understand the personal issue rooted here.//It's an issue of cultural appropriation, yes.//But for me, it's more a matter of losing an identity and being redefined. -
neo_prodigy: [in noscans_daily] Your Recommendations: LGBT Edition - What excellent comic book series/graphic novel featuring LGBTs would you recommend? Which series and/or storytellers are doing it right? -
- twistedchick: a question re warnings in AO3 - If a character death is onscreen, the question is obvious. If it's not? If the rape scene is merely alluded to and discussed, not shown in graphic and upsetting detail, does it deserve a warning? -
- happydork: Comment to hit count ratio on stories - I've been thinking recently about hit counts on a story vs the number of the comments the story gets. -
rheasilvia: Story titles and I: A dysfunctional love story. - I myself am chronically title-impaired. It's exceedingly rare for me to know what a story will be called — almost always, when I finish a story, I am completely clueless as to what it should be called. I currently have two big writing projects, over half a dozen small ones, and no titles whatsoever. How about you? What are your favorite titles — not just of your own stories, but in general? How and where do you find titles? Do they come easily to you, or do you seek them out actively in some way? -
- phoebe_zeitgeist: Some reasons why I didn't link a post to metafandom, by me, Phoebe - As a compiler, and more specifically as a compiler who from time to time uses her discretion to not link something that's been submitted, I thought it might be useful to try to explain a little of what I'm looking for when I evaluate something for metafandom. What follows, I want to emphasize, is in no way an official statement -- I'm not speaking here for [community profile] metafandom as a whole, nor for any of the other individual compilers. It's just my own approach, although of course that approach is informed by the comm's rules and goals. -
clarelondon: MAKING SHIT UP - I think all the self-justification should stop. In fact, I think it never should have started. Screw it. If people don't like the shit we make up, they can read shit other people make up or else read nonfiction. The only way to deal with the nay-sayers is to ignore them. God knows reviewers keep us busy reaching for the ego salve. Why acknowledge gender bashers? -
sparkindarkness: It's only fiction! - I repeat again that, no, I don't think straight people should stop writing with GBLT fiction. They should write it - just as I think white people should write about POC. I will never ever say that people should only write about people like them. But there is a huge world of difference between writing the other well (or trying to) and using, appropriating and stereotyping the other. -
kill_claudio: 1952 called. They want their clichés back. - there's still a bit of a battle in my mind between the authorial instincts that worry about making the characters consistent with their backgrounds and personalities, and the feminist instincts that don't want to let these attitudes go unchallenged. -
rockeandroll: RPF and keeping boundaries - So there has been some discussion about this compartmentalising thing, and how you keep your distance, and from the writing point of view, what counts as 'canon', and when 'researching canon for your fic' just becomes being nosy and overinquisitive about someone's private life. -
puella_nerdii: porn/meta is my OTP, or: why there are so many queer people in my head - On the other hand, a lot of these fics place sexuality at the center of the story in a way that makes me a little uncomfortable, because even if the story ultimately decides that it's okay to be gay (or if the characters conclude that they love each other and that gender doesn't matter -- or invoke some version of the "we're not gay, we just love each other" clause), it others queerness within the context of the story in a way that often feels a little like a slap in the face to me. -
furiosity: the freeway's heading south - I think it's important to remind ourselves every once in a while that our experience of fandom does not in fact equal that of every other fan out there, and just because we feel our corner of fandom is the bestest doesn't mean it's cool to disregard fen from other corners, especially not if we belittle them for not being fannish in the same way as we are. -

| An Old Bitch Adopts a Child |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|07:53 pm] |
Actress Jean Smart welcomed a new baby to the family in 2009 as she and her husband Richard Gilliland adopted a 10-month-old girl named Bonnie from China.
The 58-year-old star broke the big news during an appearance yesterday on The Bonnie Hunt Show, revealing that she, her husband and their 19-year-old son Connor traveled to China last year to bring home their daughter Bonnie, who is now 18 months.
Despite their 18 year age difference the proud mom says that her son and daughter are "so smitten," but laughingly adds, "We thought they were going to be closer in age when we first started this!"
Jean is best known for her work on TV series such as Designing Women, 24 and Samantha Who?

China actually has an age restriction for anyone over 50 that cannot adopt a child younger than 2; however, they let the age range slide when adopting a child with special needs. |

| Deadpool Movie Gets The Dark Comedy Writers That Wade Deserves |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|08:20 pm] |

Fans of loopy banter and insane violence rejoice — Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, of Zombieland fame, are writing the Deadpool movie. This means the "Merc with a Mouth" film could actually be clever.
Variety announced that Fox has selected Zombieland writers Reese and Wernick to bring Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool film to life.
While there's "no timetable" set the trade speculates that if the script is done by the summer, Reynolds will already be in superhero shape from filming Green Lantern and has a window of opportunity, so what's to stop a quick turnover? Well besides piling two Ryan Reynolds comic book movie releases on top of each other that is.
The writers stated that they wanted to stay true to the mythology of Deadpool, and if their previous Zombieland work is any indication of their wit, then they are a perfect fit for the fourth-wall-breaking, Bea Arthur-loving character.

| Simon Cowell Signs Paula Abdul To $4.5 Million-A-Year Contract With “The X Factor?” |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|09:53 pm] |

Get ready for another season of Simon and Paula’s signature bickering — on the US adaptation of The X Factor.
Paula Abdul has allegedly inked a $4.5 million contract to bring her loopy commentary to the judges panel on an American version of Simon’s hit UK talent show, The X Factor. That’s interesting, considering the star walked away from her post at American Idol because she failed to secure the $10 million-a-year payday she was vying for.
Apparently, Paula isn’t very good at gambling, is she?
A FOX tipster revealed to The National Enquirer’s Mike Walker: “Simon flew Paula to London and wined and dined her relentlessly over the course of several days, even introducing her to everyone who works on X Factor. But what really clinched the deal was Simon’s pledge that she wouldn’t have to deal with all the nonsense and infighting that she hated on Idol.”
The X Factor America will premiere in 2011.

| Don't Bring Beyonce Now: Fete promoters think concert will hurt Carnival 2010 |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|07:22 pm] |
Don’t bring Beyonce to Trinidad and Tobago now.
That’s the cry of fete and Carnival show promoters as well as panmen and calypsonians who are also calling on TSTT CEO, Roberto Peon, to explain what is the company’s intention towards Carnival 2010 and beyond in light of the concert featuring the American R&B singer immediately after Carnival on Thursday, February 18.
The concerned parties are delivering a petition to Peon requesting a meeting with him signed by among others, promoter Frank Martineau, mas bandleaders Big Mike Antoine and Ronnie MacIntosh, Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation general secretary Lutalo ’Brother Resistance’ Masimba and former CEO of the Caribbean Prestige Foundation, Gregory Fernandes, who is spearheading the move to secure the sitdown.
’We want to discuss with TSTT the position they have taken to present Beyonce in concert so soon after Carnival and their decision to cut back and even pull sponsorship of Carnival events. We understand they have also cancelled the B-Square concert series at Woodford Square for this year. TSTT has contributed greatly to Carnival over the years and this is a surprise move. We want to know what their commitment to Carnival is,’ Fernandes said. ( say baby i love you ) |

| Gloriana Go 'Far' in 2010! |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|08:35 pm] |
The members of Gloriana have noticed an immediate impact from winning the Breakthrough Artist of the Year trophy at the most recent American Music Awards.
"You don't realizing how many people are watching those TV shows; you win an award and you start going places," the group's Mike Gossin tells Billboard.com. "It's funny now; going to airports, people recognize us a lot more -- everywhere we go, really. They're like, 'Oh, I saw you win that award.' It was one of the highlights for this band so far. Cross our fingers, hopefully we'll win a lot more."
Gloriana -- Gossin, his older brother Tom, Rachel Reinert and Cheyenne Kimball -- was already off to a good start even before the AMAs. Its self-titled debut album, released in August, reached No. 2 on the Hot Country Albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200, while the single "Wild at Heart" was a Top 15 hit. The group's second single, "How Far Do You Wanna Go?," is currently climbing the charts.

| Cindy Margolis Orders Sperm Samples From Contestants in New Dating Show |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|05:49 pm] |
Former Playboy pin-up Cindy Margolis knows a thing or two about infertility, having given birth to her three children through IVF and later authoring the book “Having a Baby… When the Old-Fashioned Way Isn’t Working.”
Now she's bringing the idea to television with her new dating reality show, “Seducing Cindy,” to debut on the FOX Reality Channel on January 30.
“I am the spokesperson for Resolve, the National Infertility Association, so we could get away with it. We had one competition where the guys had to go through what I went through and give a sperm sample,” Margolis told Tarts. “It was interesting to have 25 guys go off into a room and bring you back a sperm sample. Clinically, I know how to test sperm, and I tested each of the guy’s sperm on my show. It was the craziest thing.”
The dating reality show has men aged 18-49 competing in a range of interesting competitions in the hope of scoring Margolis’s hand in love. And according to the upcoming reality starlet, the guys were happy to go through with the “sperm” game.
